Road Trip: Southern Rhode Island – Beaches
Rhode Island, known as the Ocean State, has 400 miles of coastline. This summer we visited southern Rhode Island a few times. Our agenda to get a change of scenery, and to explore New England. Here is a list of our favorite beaches.
Napatree Point Conservation Area, Watch Hill
With the Atlantic Ocean on one side and Little Narragansett Bay on the other, you can set up your beach chairs and relax for an hour or more, depending on your parking situation. Beware of the seagulls who will gladly swoop down and snatch your lunch. We’re talking from experience.
East Beach, Watch Hill
East Beach stretches several miles from the Watch Hill Lighthouse (and Taylor Swift’s mansion) to Misquamicut State Beach. The public access is on Bluff Ave near Larkin Road. Near the access point is the luxurious Ocean House, the yellow property.
East Beach, Charlestown
East Beach spans 3 miles of shoreline. The parking lot is small, so get there early. If you have a 4WD vehicle, consider getting a permit and go off-roading along the coast and find a more secluded spot.
Roger W. Wheeler State Beach, Narragansett
Fine white sand and calm water, this beach is perfect for families with young children.
Scarborough State Beach, Narragansett
Scarborough is one of the state’s biggest beaches, and it draws a big crowd.
Tip: East Beach in Charlestown, Roger W. Wheeler and Scarborough are state beaches. In the summer, take advantage of getting a season beach pass. Non-residents can also purchase a pass for a higher fee, but it’s worth it, especially if you might want to go beach hopping over the weekends.
